PVP-based hydrogels: Synthesis, properties and applications

PVP-based hydrogels: Synthesis, properties and applications
Roy, Niladri; Saha, Nabanita
Hydrogels are three dimensionally crosslinked polymeric network which can retain a huge amount of water but do not dissolve in water. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a synthetic polymer with good biocompatibility and transparency and with the action of different stimuli (radiation, heat, pressure, chemicals, etc.) undergoes crosslinking, and can form hydrogels. Due to their tissue compatibility and tissue like consistency, PVP hydrogels are very promising for different biomedical applications. However, because of inferior swelling capacity and poor mechanical property, the use of pure PVP hydrogels is limited. To overcome this problem, PVP is blended with different polysaccharides or other polymers according to requirement and from the standpoint of applications. This review article mainly focuses on different kinds of PVP based hydrogels; their modes of synthesis, properties and a range of applications of these blend hydrogels.

Klíčové problémy teorie a praxe učitelského vzdělávání - Sonda do situace v České republice; Key issues of theory and practice of teacher education - Probe into the situation in the Czech Republic
Švec, Vlastimil
Studie je sondou do teorie a praxe učitelského vzdělávání v České republice. Zmiňuje některé nové poznatky, které tyto výzkumy přinesly (např. poukazuje na implicitní povahu pedagogických znalostí, uvádí nový pojem "pedagogická kondice", který považuje za širší než pojem "pedagogické znalosti").; This study deals with the theory and practice of teacher education in the Czech Republic and it is focused especially on the pedagogical and psychological components of this education. The author also gives examples of theoretical problems solved through research and his work pays particular attention to the research of pedagogic knowledge and skills he participated in. He also mentions some new knowledge resulting from this research (for example, he deals with an implicit nature of pedagogic knowledge, he introduces the new term of "pedagogic condition", which he regards to be broader compared to "pedagogic knowledge).

Empirical Evidence of Development of Plastic Clusters
Pavelková, Drahomíra; Jirčíková, Eva; Knápková, Adriana; Bialic-Davendra, Magdalena Lucyna; Saha, Nibedita
The development of clusters and cluster policies is one of the sources of attaining competitive advantages of companies and regions. This contribution analyzes a sample of clusters in the plastics industry from different countries of USA, West and Central Europe and Asia, including cluster policies that generate the framework for their growth. Critical factors of cluster performance management based on results obtained from surveys and structured interviews of managers of selected plastics clusters are identified. Although these clusters exist in different parts of the world and operate in different economic and cultural conditions, there are many ideas and opinions shared by their managers introduced in this contribution.

Electromechanical sensors based on carbon nanotube networks and their polymer composites

Electromechanical sensors based on carbon nanotube networks and their polymer composites
Slobodian, Petr; Olejník, Robert; Riha, Pavel
A network of entangled multiwall carbon nanotubes and the composite consisting of filter-supported multiwall carbon nanotube network are conductors whose conductivity is sensitive to compressive stress both in the course of monotonic stress growth and when loading/unloading cycles are imposed. The testing has shown as much as 100% network conductivity increase at the maximum applied stress. The entangled carbon nanotube net-works are prepared by vacuum filtration method and peeled off from the filter. The carbon nanotubes are used in pristine condition or chemically functionalized. The filter-supported entangled networks are prepared by the nanotube dispersion filtration through a non-woven flexible polystyrene filter. The nanotubes infiltrate partly into the filter surface pores and link the accumulated filtrate layer with the filtering mat. The filter-support increases nano-tube network mechanical integrity, the composite tensile ultimate strength and affects fa-vorably the composite electrical resistance. Other obvious effect of the supporting polymer is reduction of the resistance temperature dependence. Moreover, the conductivity of car-bon nanotube networks manifests also organic vapor dependence. The dependence is re-versible, reproducible, selective as well as possibly influenced by nanotube oxidation.(http://www.springerlink.com/content/w7n2167k2m4k8002)
