dc.description.abstract The Museums Without Barriers project brings together a collection of expert contributions and research findings that focus on the accessibility of museums and galleries for people with specific learning disabilities, particularly dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia and dyspraxia. The topic is considered in a broader context – not only as a question of physical barriers, but also of cognitive, linguistic and social barriers that can affect the visitor experience. The text presents the concept of a museum as a ‘third place’ – a space for dialogue, sharing and social inclusion – and shows how the principles of inclusive design and participation can contribute to greater openness in cultural institutions. Based on the Museum Without Barriers project pursued by the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at TBU in Zlín and the Gočár Gallery, the text summarises the main research findings, international examples of good practice and specific recommendations for museum and gallery operations. It further emphasises that rather than being a marginal issue, accessibility is a measure of quality of any cultural institution. Inclusion and universal design are a way to create an environment that is understandable, safe and inspiring for all visitors, regardless of their abilities or learning style. en
