Abstract: | Paper describes film blowing of the thermoplastic starch material and aims to find possible processing window. Parameters like temperature profile of extruder, glycerol content and closely related moisture content were investigated. Rather surprisingly, processing of material with 45 parts of glycerol (from the previous research expected to be the most reasonable) led to stickiness resulting in collapse of bubble. Reduction of glycerol content down to 22 parts and water content to 10 % was found to be a compromise avoiding double-walled glued film and still maintaining sufficient expansion. The largest bubble diameter, i.e. the thinnest film, was obtained upon drying the material for 2 minutes prior to extrusion at the following temperature profile: 90, 120, 115, 95 °C. The results of the study of thermoplastic starch served as a base for the European patent application, which was recently approved (WO/2008/105705). | ||||||||||
